Leaders in Electoral Reform

We send our sons and daughters abroad to safeguard democracy. We must be as bold at home as they are in the field, striving to better the model for participation in effective self-government.

  1. I think first of all that the choice of name probably starts to define the organization as Provincial and down as opposed to Provincial and up into Federal politics.
Second this introduction of this topic could be taken to mean that Manitoba United would consider modifications of "first past the post" Perhaps in that regard it might look at allowing a municipality to experiment with the introduction of one or two Councillors at large to re-balance the unforeseen escalation of the power of a Mayor's office.
Thirdly this topic could be an invitation to experiment with a non geographic Provincial seat for perhaps some previously underrepresented social strata, for example seniors, aboriginals or greens.
I hope it gets people thinking.

  2. Just to stimulate your thinking process it could be pointed out that electoral reform might include a review of various parties nomination processes. Insiders know nominations can be a hidden place where a lot of dirty tricks reside and it currently escapes even the most superficial scrutiny.
As well, and even though it wouldn't be a regulatory issue, the electoral process in everything from non-profits to aboriginal communities could benefit from a more knowledgeable and better prepared voter. What do you think could be done with this?
